Sun Lakes Resort

What: Maple bar
When: Friday, August 11, 2017
Where: Sun Lakes Resort, near Sun Lakes Dry Falls State Park, near Coulee City, WA

This may be my favorite state part not in Nebraska. There is a large state park right next to a smaller, old fashioned family resort with cabins that has a snack bar and a golf course and boat rentals and mini golf and who knows what else, we were only there a couple days! We did take advantage of the snack bar and golf course, and of course had to get a donut! It was just a generic maple bar but I'd give it a 4/5 for the environment of getting to eat it in a cool resort. This resort was so cool, you can still send reservation forms through the mail to get a spot for the next summer!

Big Dog Donuts & Deli

What: Maple old fashioned, blueberry cake
When: Tuesday, September 5th, 2017
Where: Florence, OR
Website

On our first full day in Florence, OR we decided to hit up the local donut place which happened to have one of the best names ever, Big Dog! Sadly, it was pretty late in the day so the donut selection was pretty slim. The maple old fashioned was ok, but I don't really like old fashioned donuts anyways, so I don't know why I got it. I'm not going to rate it because it wouldn't be fair. The blueberry was much better, great blueberry flavor. I'd give that one a 4/5.

Dundee's Donuts

What: Maple cake donut and a Holy Moly
When: August 29th, 2017
Where: Seaside, OR

While in one of the cutest towns ever on the Oregon coast, we found Dundee Donuts. It was next too the Dundee Restaurant and looked like it had opened recently as an offshoot of the restaurant. They didn't have the biggest selection (did I tell you we've been having trouble getting up early recently? We gotta work on not sleeping away half the day!). I got the maple cake, sort of obviously, and hubby got the Holy Moly which was just a string of donut holes on a stick and frosted. It was pretty good, more memorable than my cake donut! I'd give the cake donut a 2.5/5 and the Holy Moly a 4/5 because who doesn't love food on a stick?

Cowboy Cafe

What: Caramel Roll
Where: Medora, ND
When: Wednesday, July 26th, 2017

If you've never been to Medora, ND be prepared. It's crazy. It kind of reminded me of Disney, if Disney tried to take over a town. See, have the businesses in town are all run by the same firm/foundation and it's strange. But that's for another post.

The Cowboy Cafe is an independently owned business in Medora with some yummy yummy food. We may have gone there twice. Hubby was super excited to try the caramel roll, hence the second trip for breakfast the day we left Theodore Roosevelt National Park. And what a caramel roll it was. It didn't photograph well, but it was a giant roll just dripping in caramel. I know it's not a donut, but I rate it a 5/5.

Best Donuts Factory

What: Chocolate raised, maple sprinkled raised
Where: Great Falls, MT
When: Saturday, July 29th, 2017

Great Falls is kind of a weird town to visit because a lot of the downtown seems shut down. Even this place looked a little closed at first. It probably also didn't help that we arrived 40 minutes before the closed in the afternoon and the selection was not the greatest. Hubby wanted a blueberry but the clerk told him those were actually yesterday's blueberry so he chose a different donut. First, I was impressed by the shape. Hexagons! Not circles! Something different always excites me, especially if it's related to mathematics. Or I'm just crazy and see math everywhere. Which, I mean, it is everywhere.
Anyways, back to the donuts. They were amazing. Seriously, some of the best run of the mill donuts I've ever had. We ate them in the car outside and I was so close to going back in to get more. Everything was perfect about them. 5/5.

Greenbush Bakery

What: Maple blueberry cake, chocolate cake
Where: Madison, WI
When: Friday, July 14th 2017

A more successful Madison donut stop than Dough Baby, we hit up Greenbush Bakery after we went to the Madison zoo (which was free by the way, and totally cute). I was impressed by the selection so late in the afternoon and then saw that they were open till 3am! When I asked about it, the woman said they were already on their second run of donuts for the day and that they would probably have two more runs before the end of the night. Fresh donuts in the afternoon are the best!

The maple blueberry was perfect, great donut and great icing and so unique! In my reviews (which are too numerous to count at this point...) I have never seen a blueberry donut with maple frosting. 5/5 for sure. Hubby got chocolate cake and I don't really remember anything about it so I'm thinking 2/5. I know you guys love my rating system :-)

Raphaels

What: Glazed raised, chocolate cake, maple cake, maple cinnamon roll
Where: Bemidji, MN
When: Wednesday, July 19th, 2017

We may have gone a little overboard with our donut order in Bemidji, which stunk because they were pretty disappointing. These may have been the first time I threw out half eaten donuts. I'm not sure if they were old, or just not what Raphaels is known for.

Dough Baby

What: Chocolate sandwich cookie (Keep reading, I'll explain)
Where: Madison, WI
When: Thursday, July 13th 2017

We ended up walking around the pedestrian mall in Madison (State Street) and Dough Baby was still open, but out of donuts. So on to chocolate cookies! It was delicious and I'm so glad we tried it. I also liked the list of ingredients on the wall, but then the price list annoyed me. Can anyone find the problem? Gotta be good at math, people!

Bloom

What: Sweet Potato cake donut
Where: Middleton, WI
When: July 12th, 2017

I had read they they were known for their sweet potato donuts and almost wrote them off because sweet potatoes are definitely not my thing. But then when we got to Middleton (also home of the Mustard Museum!) there was Bloom, so why not check it out. And the sweet potato donut looked pretty good so I said lets go for it, how often are we in Middleton (which is outside Madison by the way).
I am sooooo glad we tried it. This may have been one of the best donuts I've ever had. It reminded me a lot of a good apple cider donut. Moist. Coated with sugar. 6/5. I want to go back.

ChuChu

What: Raised glazed, blueberry, chocolate cake
Where: Ankeny, IA
When: July 11th, 2017
Website

First donut trip on the road was a place we stumbled upon on the road between our campsite and our friends' house. And the name was either ChuChu Donuts or Ambrosia. Maybe it was Chuchu and then changed to Ambrosia? I have no idea. But the donuts were solid. The selection was extensive. Hubby said the blueberry wasn't the best he ever had, but that the glazed was his favorite. I thought the glazed was better than the chocolate I picked out as well.

We did it!

We've left on our year long road trip! I told you guys about that, right? Oops! We'll be on the road for the next 12-18 months or so, but don't worry I haven't forgotten about you guys! We've hit up three donut places so far, so hopefully reviews will be forthcoming. We've also started a blog about the trip if you want to check that out in the meantime. Hopefully hubby will write more there so I can refocus on my donuts here!

Lincoln beer

We may not do the Nebraska Passport this summer because we're a little busy. But that doesn't mean we don't have time for free beer! Lincoln is doing a craft beer passport and 9 breweries are participating and offering free pints of their beer! We went the Sunday after our first camp out to celebrate a successful first try!

The passports are available at the local tourism office and are free to pick up (and include a nifty beer opener!). We have until Dec 31st to get to all the breweries and earn a special beer glass, but honestly I just want to get free beer!.

Hubs filling out his passport about his beer.
My beer!

New donuts to try

So many different types of donuts out there now! Besides the donut croissant hybrid (which Olsen's does amazing) now the local grocery store has a donut cinnamon roll! Adding it to the list to try!

Cabinet doors

I've begun nesting. I'm not having a baby, this is just the first time I can really decorate something. We're not renting, we own! I still have to think about resale value and my own abilities.
So I started "small" and tackled the bedroom first. I figure there are only four cabinet doors in there, I can handle painting those first. And if I liked it, do the rest step by step.

Here is my before and after shots:

And now the process:
I used Dutch Boy Kitchen and Bath semi gloss and I almost wish I went even more matte than that. I wanted it to be easy clean, but it is a little shiney for bedroom cabinets. I sanded each door and then put painters tape around the two mirrors. My aunt helped out and we ended up doing 4 coats over the course of an afternoon.

Paint! Too bad they don't sell it smaller than a quart, four coats only just started to make the level go down.

Getting ready to take off door pulls. There were two smaller doors for above the bed.
And two longer doors for next to the bed with mirror insets.
To take the handles off I used the same square shaped screwdriver that I used to take the doors off the hinges in the camper. I'm not sure if "square" is a normal screwdriver like flat head and phillips, or if it's the result of driving in screws, but thankfully my tool kit had the right head!
Look at all these heads!
Step 2: tape.

Coat one.

Another coat.

And another.

Besides doing the cabinets I also fell in love with this green paint from Rust-oleam (Metallic Accent paint in Luminous Pear) so I decided to try it on the handles. I did two coats and I think they look pretty good against the white. I may end up also using the green as an accent above the bed between the two real cabinet doors where they have what I call the fake cabinet door, or what most people would refer to as a panel.

Getting ready. I didn't actually use that brush.
One coat down.

Two coats, resting it on the door to see how it looks with the white.
Green's my favorite color.

Last Day of School Donuts

Made it to another last day of school. Treated myself to BOGO Hurts yesterday after finals were all done. And then got another Hurts donut this morning for the last "Friday Donuts" with the math department. Two weeks till the summer job starts!

Parchment Paper Chicken

My brother-in-law recently sent me this youtube video thinking it looked like something I'd be interested in. Heck yeah! It is a quick overview of four different recipes for cooking chicken wrapped in parchment paper (hello easy clean up!) thus keeping it moist. I even sent it on to another sister who tried it first. We both used foil for our trials, but she pre made a couple of them to eat during a week without labeling them. Surprise dinner!

I tried the bbq chicken and the asparagus one, but I am horrible about making sure I really have all the ingredients ahead of time. For the bbq, my potatoes had gone bad so I used a bed of spinach. For the asparagus one I totally missed the pesto and sliced tomatoes and just bought the asparagus. So I substituted some feta cheese and called it a day. This may not really be a review of the recipes then...
Anyways, here are the pics and I would definitely make them again. The bbq was the best (covered with white onion and corn) and the asparagus one was just eh. Buy the pesto next time, Crazy Donut Lady!
